Butterflies and hovers

The last few weeks have seen the usual comma, peacock, red admiral, meadow brown… in good numbers. Here are some of the others: a Holly Blue with its wings open

An Essex Skipper at Butts Piece: these look much like Small Skippers, but have antennae that are black under the tip

Essex Skipper (Thymelicus lineola)

Meanwhile the garden – especially the marjoram patch – has been full of hoverflies (mouse-over the photos for details)

    Not Syrphus ribesii I’m afraid, it’s a Sphaerophoria species, probably scripta.
