The Butts Piece Scarlet Tiger Moth colony produced a good crop of caterpillars in April, and as expected the adults are starting to appear:

Here’s a graph showing the emergence of larvae and adults over the last few years: it’s not altogether scientific as my observations are weekly at best, but it certainly shows the impact of last year’s cold spring. This year’s rain does not seem to have affected the timing.

Closely following the chiffchaffs, there are whitethroats,

Whitethroat (Sylvia communis)
willow warblers,

Willow Warbler (Phylloscopus trochilus)

and for the first time in several years, skylarks

Skylark (Alauda arvensis) in flight
and the bug season is under way – here’s a (cute but destructive) figwort weevil on the buddleia,

Figwort weevil (Cionus scrophulariae)
a 2-spot ladybird (I hadn’t seen this variant before)

2-spot ladybird (Adalia 2-punctata)

and the inevitable Harlequin

Harlequin ladybird (Harmonia axyridis)

Meanwhile solitary bees are getting on with life…
