Waiting for winter

Goldfinch (Carduelis carduelis)

Winter migrant redwings and fieldfares should soon arrive to take advantage of hedgerows full of haws, hips and sloes; meanwhile flocks of goldfinches are finding the last remaining thistles,

Rook (Corvus frugilegus)

and rooks are finding acorns. I though only jays would cache them to eat in the spring, but it seems that rooks and crows do the same.

In the garden there are plenty of house sparrows and starlings (both “red-listed” species because of their long-term decline)

Starling (Sturnus vulgaris)

Bluetit (Cyanistes caeruleus)

Greenfinch (Carduelis chloris)Collared dove (Streptopelia decaocto)Great tit (Parus major)Robin (Erithacus rubecula)

and the ever-present sparrowhawk
