Butterflies and dragonflies

Meadow brownStill only a few butterflies around – mostly large whites, and the occasional meadow brown [sorry, my friends on Flickr tell me it’s a gatekeeper] , seen here in the hedge. Then a huge dragonfly – the first I’ve seen in the garden – settled on the leaf of a broken beech twig; I think it’s a southern hawker, but please comment if you know otherwise. Despite its bright colours, it found a spot where it was quite hard to see (or photograph): as usual, you can click the image for a bigger version on Flickr.

How to build the perfect fly-trap

The perfect fly-trap1. Find a leaf that someone has conveniently eaten a hole in.
2. Spin a net over the hole
3. Wait for the next meal to arrive.
The picture shows stage 2 nearing completion (click image for bigger view in Flickr)

Thunderbugs

ThunderbugAs normal for a humid afternoon, everything (and everyone) is covered in these irritating little insects. Best I could do (after scratching my head to remove them) was to try to get a picture – with limited success, as they are only a millimetre or two long, and there’s not much point in a tripod if your subject keeps moving!

Red kite in the sunIt was too windy for macro photography, so I tried for some more birds in flight: not much to see except the usual red kites, a few pigeons and herring gulls – and a distant sparrowhawk.

The spider and the fly

Garden spiders are hatching, and small spiders like this are building webs everywhere. This one caught a greenfly – I hope it catches a few more.

Even smaller

Very small black beetleI took the new lens for a spin, and found loads of tiny things that I couldn’t identify (and so are not in the index). Depth of field with this lens is quite shallow, and all the shots are hand-held (some not as sharp as I liked). Please comment if you can identify any of these!
