Hagbourne ravens?

Heard a loud honk – the sort of noise you get when you put a blade of grass between your thumbs and blow hard – but I dismissed it as kids playing. That is until I saw a pair of large black birds disappearing beyond the house opposite. I can’t be sure – they were much bigger than jackdaws, and black from behind – but I’ve heard that ravens have been seen in Oxfordshire recently. Has anyone else spotted them in the area?

Peacock butterfly on the roof
I think these usually come out of hibernation in early April – another sign of a mild winter? I’ve also seen a few brimstone butterflies.

Red kite
This one announced its presence with a loud “weee-ooo” and flew off sunward, rendering further attempts to photograph it futile. I think they know about cameras! Not sure whether I can add this to “garden birds” in Flickr – it did fly over the garden.

Small noisy bird...
Monday: heard it before I saw it. I gather more goldfinches are over-wintering in the UK now than a few years ago, but I’ve no way to tell whether this one (and the several others now here) are resident or migratory. Last year they nested locally.

Landing
If I’m going to get photos of birds (especially kites) in flight, I’ll need a bit of practice. Pigeons make relatively easy targets…
